FASTag KYC, and what changed in 2026
KYC is the quiet reason a perfectly funded tag stops working. It is also the easiest of the blocking causes to put right, provided you know it is the cause.
What is required
- Identity proof — commonly Aadhaar or PAN.
- The vehicle registration certificate.
- A passport-size photograph.
- Current contact details, so deduction messages actually reach you.
Why it blocks a working tag
Full KYC is mandatory on every FASTag account. Where it is incomplete or has gone stale, the tag is liable to be suspended until verification is completed — and that suspension looks exactly like a balance problem at the lane, which is why it is so often misdiagnosed.
For tags issued to cars, jeeps and vans from 1 February 2026, the Know Your Vehicle step is no longer a routine requirement after activation. Full KYC still applies, and the tag must still match the registration number.
Re-verification on older accounts
Accounts that have been open for several years are being asked to verify again, in some cases by video. A tag can be restricted until that is done, so it is worth acting on the request when it arrives rather than after the next failed crossing.
