Getting an SBI FASTag

There is very little to it, provided the class is right and the KYC is complete. Most of the problems people have later are decided at this stage rather than at the plaza.

What you need

  • The vehicle registration certificate.
  • Identity proof for KYC — Aadhaar or PAN.
  • A passport-size photograph.
  • An opening balance for the prepaid wallet.

The four steps

  1. Confirm the vehicle class. Check the registration certificate against the class table, because a wrong class means either a flagged crossing or quiet overpayment on every trip.
  2. Complete full KYC. Identity, address and vehicle details verified up front, so the tag is not suspended later.
  3. Have the tag issued and funded. It is written to the registration number and an opening balance is loaded.
  4. Fix it inside the windscreen, flat against the glass at top centre.

What it costs

A new tag involves a one-time issuance fee, a refundable security deposit and an opening balance. Those amounts are set by the issuing bank and are revised from time to time, so we would rather tell you the figure that applies today than publish a number here that goes stale.

One tag per vehicle

Under One Vehicle, One FASTag only one active tag is permitted per chassis. If the vehicle already has a tag, have that one dealt with rather than adding a second — a duplicate is what causes the older tag to be blocked.
