Barrier-free MLFF tolling in India
Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling reads your tag from an overhead gantry at full highway speed. There is no boom, no lane to pick and nothing to slow for — the crossing simply appears on your statement.
How it differs from a normal plaza
A conventional plaza funnels you into a lane and holds a barrier until payment clears. MLFF removes both. High-performance sensors and cameras on overhead gantries identify the vehicle and deduct the toll through FASTag while it travels at highway speed, with minimal human intervention.
Where it is live
- Chorayasi, Surat–Bharuch, NH-48 (Gujarat) — India's first MLFF plaza, launched May 2026.
- Mundka Bakkarwala, UER-II (Delhi) — took the system into dense city-edge traffic.
- Daulatpura, Delhi–Jaipur, NH-48 — live from 20 June 2026 on one of northern India's busiest corridors.
What comes next
NHAI and IHMCL are working toward national coverage by the end of 2026. The first phase runs as a hybrid: physical barriers stay in place and FASTag remains the primary method, with satellite positioning used to validate the crossing rather than replace the tag.
There is no boom to stop at and no operator to argue with. A tag that is unfunded, blacklisted or badly placed simply produces an unpaid crossing that surfaces later as a due against the vehicle.
Does GNSS replace FASTag?
Not in the current phase. Satellite-based tolling has been discussed for distance-based charging on selected highways, but the framework in force keeps FASTag as the method that pays the toll, with GNSS in a validating role.
