Selling the car: close the tag

The tag is written to one registration and it cannot be peeled off and reused. Leaving it live on a vehicle you no longer own is a small oversight with a long tail.

Last reviewed 17 September 2026

Why it cannot be transferred

A FASTag is issued against a specific registration number and vehicle class. Physically moving it achieves nothing — the tag still declares the old vehicle. The new owner needs a tag of their own, issued to their registration.

What happens to the balance

The balance sits in the prepaid wallet attached to the account, not in the sticker. It can generally be carried across to a tag on your replacement vehicle, or refunded along with the security deposit when the tag is closed.

Dues follow the registration

If the tag stays live and crossings are made after the sale, the deductions come out of your wallet. If it stays live and unfunded, unpaid dues attach to a registration that is no longer yours to manage.

The order to do it in

  1. Settle any outstanding due or e-notice on the vehicle.
  2. Close or deactivate the tag with the issuer, and ask for the deposit back.
  3. Move the remaining balance to the tag on your new vehicle, if you have one.
  4. Tell the buyer to have their own tag issued before they use a highway.

Buying a used car

Check whether a tag is already fitted and whose account it belongs to. Under One Vehicle, One FASTag a new tag issued against the same chassis blocks the old one, so an unresolved previous tag is a problem you inherit.

Common questions

Can I transfer my FASTag to a new car?
No. A FASTag is issued against one registration number and cannot be moved between vehicles. The balance can generally be carried across to a new tag.
What should I do with my FASTag when selling my car?
Settle any outstanding dues, close or deactivate the tag with the issuer and reclaim the security deposit, then move any remaining balance to a tag on your new vehicle.
I bought a used car with a FASTag already on it. What now?
Find out whose account it belongs to and have it closed. Under One Vehicle One FASTag a new tag against the same chassis blocks the old one, so an unresolved previous tag causes problems.
